This week elementary students took part in the project "A wish for the Holidays"
Students wrote letters to children and their families currently being held in family immigration detention centers. The project is a national effort, that aims to deliver thousands of letters before the holidays as a reminder to the children in detention that they are not alone, and that children across the country are standing with them as they seek release. Copies of the letters will be delivered to President Obama, representatives in congress and other government officials.
Tens of thousands of families seeking asylum or merely awaiting decisions on immigrant status, are forced to wait in detention centers – the largest here in Texas. These are not people who have committed crimes, and even if undocumented are in process of adjudicating cases. If you would like more information about family detention policies visit here.
Fe y Justicia Workers Justice Center helped organize the letter campaign in this area. Fe y Justicia is housed at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. You may visit their site here.
